Naco (fem. naca ) is a degrading word that is often used in Spanish Mexican to describe people who are less polite, less educated or person people with bad taste. The equivalent cover could include bogan, white trash, tacky, scouts and ghettos. "Redneck" can also be close even though the Spanish word is more similar to that used for rural people. Naco is also used to describe a person who feels ashamed of his or her own culture. Quite the opposite of what has been widely used. The true meaning comes from the Indigenous language. It points a finger to someone with a lack of knowledge about his own culture.

A naco ( Ã, na'ko Ã, ) is usually associated with low socioeconomic and/or indigenous classes, but also includes new rich people.

Definition and usage

The term naco is commonly used to describe people, behaviors, or aesthetic choices that are deemed impure or unsophisticated, often by way of comics. As a person, "naco" may indicate a general lack of improvement by adopting a "gangster mentality", unintelligible verbal or slang expressions, strange accents, impolite social, or a bad sense of humor. The word probably comes from a "totonaco" contraction that refers to members of the Totonacs, who in the past have sometimes been used as a disparaging term for indigenous peoples in general.

The term is often associated with lower social classes, but it is also used as an elitist expression of learned circles to describe the uneducated, and among the middle and upper classes as a synonym of bad taste. In many situations, the word may have no insulting intention and may even show intimacy.

The Mexican definition of naco may be analogous to the modern American definition of redneck, English chav or French beauf . However, use and insulting tone vary. For example: "Damn, the guy is like naco"

The use of sociolinguistics

In the last few decades, the middle and upper class in Mexico has experienced rapid expansion because, inter alia, economic development and urbanization. The new middle class and "nouveau riche" have entered the competition on status symbols such as cars, houses and jewelry, which has generated the term "naco" as a cultural or economic elite. Higher-ranking Mexicans often see abundant wealth as making someone more naco, because they make their own goggles with excessive compensation for lower social status.
