In the legal field, a single practitioner or solo practitioner is a self-trained lawyer, in a law firm that may include non-lawyer support personnel but excludes other lawyers.

A single practitioner (English) usually also refers;

  • Registered European lawyers or attorneys (in England and Wales) by the Attorney-Regulatory Authority (SRA) to provide their own public paid legal services and are not tied to law firms or organizations, or
  • an unregulated lawyer with a SRA that provides legal services alone outside the organization and is governed by a legitimate and legally recognized legal or regulatory body.

Single practitioners governed by CFS do not include the following lawyers, who may also work alone or as sole attorneys with organizations:

  • A regulated lawyer working for a company or non-legal organization, except for certain purposes under SRA rules.
  • Highly qualified and recognized professional lawyers governed by the Standard Bar Board.
  • Lawyers who have achieved their professional qualifications through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).
  • A lawyer who may be eligible and allowed to practice certain areas of law through separate regulators, such as the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (for non-lawyer/attorney immigration lawyers) or insolvency practitioners, administered by The Insolvency Service.

The above lawyers can also practice law and provide their own legal services in accordance with their specific regulatory authorization requirements, rules and regulatory processes. For example, CILEx publishes guidelines and rules applicable to qualified Legal Executives that provide legal services only.

A single practitioner will most likely be a sole trader under English law, which means that the lawyer is self-employed and will run the business as an individual, paying income tax on profit.

Beginning May 25, 2016, the sole practitioner of lawyers is governed under Rule 10 of the SRA handbook, which provides that subjects for certain exemptions, regulated lawyers can not regulate their own legal practice and provide legal services as the sole practitioner unless they have applied and obtain authorization to do so from the CFS.

The legal practice of an authorized sole practitioner, known as "recognized sole practice" is acknowledged and ratified separately by the CFS of the regulated corporate governance and partnership structure.

Single practitioners in the UK are required to provide information on their website and on their engagement that clearly identifies who authorizes and governs their services, and their professional authorization or identification number that can be checked with the regulator.
