Description
This work is an ambitious tribute to DalÃÆ''s Spain. It combines Spanish history, religion, art, and myth into a unified whole. It was assigned to Huntington Hartford for the opening of the Museum of Modern Art Gallery in New York 2 Columbus Circle. At this time, some Catalan historians claim that Columbus actually originated in Catalonia, not Italy, making this discovery more relevant to DalÃÆ', which also originated from the Spanish region.
Eponymic paintings relate to Christopher Columbus's first landing in the New World; it describes events metaphorically rather than aiming at historical accuracy. Columbus is portrayed not as a middle-aged sailor, but as a teenage boy in a classical robe to symbolize America as a young continent with his best years ahead.
DalÃÆ', in periods of intense interest in Roman Catholic mysticism at the time, symbolically portrays Columbus bringing Christianity and the true church into a new world as a great and holy achievement.
Gala DalÃÆ', the wife of the painter, whom she often describes as the Virgin Mary, acts as the Blessed Virgin (or according to some Saint Helena commentators) on the banner to the right of Columbus. He appears as a Saint, indicating that he is a muse of DalÃÆ' and that he is responsible for himself, "Discovery of America".
DalÃÆ' painted himself in the background as a kneeling monk who held the cross. Dalaf believes that Columbus is a Catalan represented by the incorporation of the old Catalan flag.
The painting contains many references to the work of Diego VelÃÆ'ázquez (especially The Surrender of Breda), a Spanish painter who had died 300 years earlier, and who influenced the paintings of Dalá and his mustache. DalÃÆ' borrowed the spear from the painting and placed it on the right side of his work. In these spears, DalÃÆ' has painted the image of the crucified Christ, which is based on the image by Spanish mystic, St. John.
In the bottom center of the painting, on the beach a few steps ahead of Columbus, is a chaotic brook and choppy ball, with a strange halo-like ring around it.
