Cheryl's first foray into a solo music career took place when she performed at "Heartbreaker" will.i.am. After streetdancing lessons during the filming of the Passions of Girls Aloud series, Cheryl was selected to appear in the song's video. She was then asked to sing female vocals on the release of the song in the UK. The Cheryl version is featured on the album because it is not featured on the album will.i.am Songs About Girls .

Recording

It was confirmed on April 27, 2009 via MTV UK that Cheryl will be working on solo material. Cheryl reunited with will.i.am, and also worked with Syience, Taio Cruz, and Wayne Wilkins. Cruz was asked to write two songs for Cheryl, the first, "Break Your Heart", written specifically for Cheryl but Polydor's Ferdy Unger-Hamilton's label boss felt the song was too similar to "Heartbreaker", a song Cheryl did with will.i.am. Cruz recaptured the song and released it as the lead single from his second album, Rokstarr . The song then reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and on US Billboard Hot 100. Another song, "Stand Up", made the album. The album begins with a song title, a duet with will.i.am and Cheryl's favorite song on the album. He said the song was "completely different from anything I've done [with Girls Aloud] or liked before" and took his inspiration from the new love Cheryl earned for dance music on the charts, especially David Guetta and Kelly Rowland "When Love Take Over ". "Parachute", written by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson and Marshall Altman with the production of Syience, is described by Cheryl as "left-of-field" and "unique". He says "you are your own worst enemy, you will never win the battle" as the favorite lyrics of the album. Cheryl also noted that it was a contender for the lead single album. "Heaven", another will.i.am production, is the first song co-written and recorded by Cheryl for 3 Words and for that reason holds a "special meaning" to him. It contains an example of "Do You" by D.I.M., written by Andreas Meid.

Cheryl revealed that the lead single, "Fight for This Love", came to him in the form of a demo with a male vocalist. Cheryl said she "immediately knew it was a single", having "connected the song really well". "Rain on Me", co-written by a prolific American songwriter, Sam Watters and Louis Biancaniello, is one of the last songs recorded for 3 Words. Cheryl recorded a song in Los Angeles and said the process was "emotional" because the recording of the album was about to end. "Make Me Cry" is the first song Cheryl recorded with will.i.am in Los Angeles. Cheryl wrote passages around the will.i.am hook, which was inspired by her boyfriend. Cheryl said that she listened to the "Happy Hour" demo, originally titled "Sweet and Sour", repeated because she really enjoyed the song. He further noted that the song, produced by Soulshock & amp; Karlin, has a "60s voice" and "one of the tracks that you really like or you do not get." This interpolates the element of Renaldo Domino "Nevermore", written by Richard Pegue.

"Stand Up" was written and produced by Taio Cruz and Fraser T Smith. Smith claims that for one day he and Cruz write "Break Your Heart" which was rejected in the morning and "Stand Up" in the afternoon. Cruz described the song as "the absolute banger club". The song features an uncredited rap by Cruz, who was initially absent. Cheryl says it is "one of the instant tracks that make you feel good." "Stand Up" melodic melodic reference "bop bop" from Duran Duran's "Planet Earth". "Do not Talk About This Love" was written by songwriter/producer Chris Braide and Nikola Bedingfield, the singers of Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield. Originally recorded by Nikola Bedingfield as the title track for her debut EP. Cheryl's A & amp; R in Polydor remembered the track and suggested he record it with Braide in his studio. Cheryl is interested in the song because of the lyrics and the vibrations, saying it "feels right." In an interview with HitQuarters Braide said, "This is a very emotional song." He said to me, 'I'm really dealing with this.' And I do not know if it has anything to do with his personal situation at the time, but... "" Boy Like You ", featured and produced by will.i.am, a 1988 Fleetwood Mac single sample" Little Lies ", which originally drew Cheryl to the song. Cheryl wants to take a sample of Fleetwood Mac and create something modern and modern with it. The album also featured a clean version of "Heartbreaker" will.i.am, which Cheryl provides female vocals.

Music and lyrics

Thematically 3 Words revolves around the complexities of relationships and love, with Cheryl singing about discovering, winning, embracing and losing love. The album's lyrics follow an autobiographical subtitle where most of the songs dealing with him overcome his misery. Andy Gill of The Independent describes the lyrics of the album as showing that "the path to romantic satisfaction is characterized by betrayal, uncertainty and secrecy." The lyrics to some songs have "deeper paranoia" such as "Parachute", "Make Me Cry" and "Do not Talk About This Love", which Gill describes as "fear that other people are determined to destroy their relationship, so" they know, the less they rate '. "

3 Words is a dance-pop and R & amp; B which explores various genres including modern pop with the music elements of the decline of the 90's. The production of this album is characterized as "under control" in its setting with heavy beats built on "light piano-style motifs and acoustic guitar elements", according to BBC's Mike Diver.

Critical reception

3 Words received a generally favorable comment from contemporary pop music critics, ranking 62 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 6 reviews. The Guardian gave the album three stars out of five but found it "too tentative and a little to be more than a footnote in the unstoppable story of Cheryl's celebrity." Tom Ewing argues, "The parts of this album never go beyond conservative preoccupations, but a shift in sound is still needed." The further reviews describe 3 Words as "a low-key, low-key pop record whose best songs are rarely held." Kim Dawson of the Daily Star felt this album "another victory" for Cheryl, arguing that "a modest 90's R & amp; B/pop collection has the same charm as Geordie's great smile." Gay Magazine Attitude agrees, stating that although it is preserved "introduces us to Cheryl as an individual - the girl behind the gloss, very hip, very now, and ultimately very Cheryl." Two weeks Irish Hot Press said: "The People's Daughter is pleased with the generic pop of interest." BBC Music provides a diverse review album, but notes it "outpacing pessimistic predictions".

The album was criticized compared to Cheryl's work with Girls Aloud. Digital Spy said the album was "not a bad record, but also not a modern pop classic to rival the best Girls Aloud albums [...] it's a collection of cool and contemporary pop-R & amp; to reveal his charm. " The Daily Telegraph described the album as" selection of sexy but underwhelming R'n'B pop ", noting that" there are no signs of bubbly personality that have won over X Factor viewers "or" electro-guitar fusion that puts Girls Aloud on top ". The Financial Times also called it "a disappointing solo album, [...] exchanged the splendor of Girls Aloud for an R & B-flavored song with grim taps and no-character chants." Pete Paphides of The Times agreed that Cheryl's personality "does not exist from the mid-filler" and exclaims that "even when the 3 Words gives you something to admire, the emotional temperatures rarely nudges above the cold. " The Independent further states that the album" completely loses its imagination and risk, by trying and testing the producer's R & D [...] doing what which they do as soon as possible. " Pierre Oitmann of the Dutch news website Nu.nl points out "this album is largely characterized by a strong A & amp; R management: a thoroughly searched song and consistent production value", before concluding "Cheryl's role is reduced almost entirely to 'girls hot 'on the cover.
