William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet (abbreviated to Romeo Juliet ) is a directed 1996 Hollywood romantic crime film, co. Manufactured , and co-authored by Baz Luhrmann, co-produced by Gabriella Martinelli, and co-authored by Craig Pearce, became the adaptation and modernization of the William Shakespeare tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the lead role of Romeo and Juliet, who instantly fell in love when Romeo held a party and met him, even though they became members of the Montague and Capulet families; Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, and Diane Venora starred in supporting roles.

While retaining the original Shakespeare dialogue, the film represents Montions and Capulets as a mafia empire that fought (with legitimate business) during the 1990s America, and swords were replaced with weapons (with brand names like "Dagger" and "Sword"). Some character names also change. Lord and Lady Montague and Lord and Lady Capulet are named first (in the original, their first names are never mentioned); Friar Laurence became Father Laurence, and Prince Escalus was renamed as Captain of the Prince. Adaptation eliminates the character of Friar John, and some characters change the family - in the original, Gregory and Sampson are Capulets, but in the movie, they are Montagues (Abram, like Abra, and Petruchio, by contrast, shifted from Montague to the Capulet family). In addition, some detail plots are shifted, especially towards the end.

The film was released on November 1, 1996 by 20th Century Fox for commercial success, and was greeted with positive reviews in general. The film earned $ 147.5 million over $ 14.5 million in budget. At the 47th Berlin International Film Festival in 1997, DiCaprio won the Silver Bear for Best Actor and Luhrmann won the Alfred Bauer Prize. Luhrmann was also nominated for the Golden Bear Award for Best Picture. At the 69th Academy Awards, Catherine Martin and Brigitte Broch were nominated for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration. In 2005, the film was included in the list of 50 BFI movies you should see at the age of 14.

Plot

In Verona Beach, Capulets and the Montagues are bitter enemies. The hostility of the older generation - Fulgencio and Gloria Capulet as well as Ted and Caroline Montague - was felt by their younger relatives. The battle between Montague's boys led by Benvolio, Romeo's cousin, and Capulet's children led by Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, created chaos in the city. The Chief Constable, Captain Prince, rebuked the family, warning them that if such behavior continues, their lives "will pay for the loss of peace".

Benvolio meets Romeo on the beach. While playing pool games they learned about the party held by Capulets that night that they decided to strike. Romeo agrees to come after discovering that Rosaline, with whom he falls in love, is present. Then, Montague's children meet their friend, Mercutio, who has a ticket to the party. Romeo took the ecstasy Mercutio gave him and they proceeded to Capulet's house. The effects of drugs and parties flooded Romeo, who went to the restroom. While admiring the aquarium, she sees Juliet on the other side, and the two instantly fall in love. Tybalt sees Romeo and vows to kill him for attacking his family home, but Fulgencio stops him.

Romeo and Juliet slip into the elevator and kiss. The nurse sees them as the door opens and drags Juliet away, telling her that Romeo is a Montague. At the same time, Romeo realizes that Juliet is a Capulet. Mercutio got rid of Romeo from the party, but he slipped back into the mansion, hiding under Juliet's balcony. Juliet appears to the yard and declares her love for Romeo before she sneaks behind her. Juliet warns him that he is risking his life, but Romeo tells him that he does not care if he's caught. Knowing the nurse was looking for her, Juliet told him that, if she sent the word the next day, they would be arranged. The next day, Romeo visits Father Laurence, telling him that he wants to marry Juliet. He agreed to marry the couple in the hope that their marriage would end the violence among the families. Romeo delivered the news to nurse Juliet and married lovers.

Tybalt met Mercutio on the beach just as Romeo arrived. Romeo tries to make peace, but Tybalt attacks him. Mercutio intervened and handcuffed Tybalt, and nearly finished him off when Romeo stopped him. Tybalt then cut Mercutio with broken glass in his stomach. Mercutio condemned both Montagues and Capulets before dying in Romeo's arms. Angry, Romeo chases Tybalt who runs away and punches him.

Captain Prince kicked Romeo out of town. Romeo hid with Father Laurence, who took care of his injuries and said that, after some time, he would help Romeo and Juliet return to town and make peace with their families and friends. The nurse arrived and told Romeo that Juliet was waiting for her. When Romeo climbs Juliet's balcony, she kisses it and they perfect their marriage. Meanwhile, Fulgencio decided Juliet would marry Dave Paris, the son of the governor.

The next morning, Romeo almost got out of Capulet's house when Gloria told Juliet that the family had promised to marry Paris. He refused, and Fulgencio threatened to disown him. Her mother and nurse insisted it would be in her interest to marry Paris. To get out of this, Juliet runs away and seeks Father Laurence, begging him to help her and threatens to commit suicide. Father Laurence suggested he fake his own death and put in the Capulet's vault to wake up 24 hours later. Romeo will be notified of the plot, sneaking into the vault, and after reuniting the two can escape to Mantua. He gave her a concoction that imitates death. After saying good night to her mother, Juliet took the potion and put in a coma. He was found in the morning, declared dead, and placed in a vault. Balthasar, one of Romeo's cousins, learned that Juliet was dead and told Romeo, who was not home when the messenger arrived with a letter from Father Laurence.

Romeo returned to Verona and bought a bottle of poison. When he goes to church, Captain Prince knows he's back, and tries to catch him, with no results. Father Laurence knew that Romeo never got his letter and did not know that Juliet was alive. Romeo entered the church where Juliet lied and said goodbye to her. He woke up just as Romeo took poison; both look at each other and share the last kiss before he dies. Juliet who was confused took Romeo's gun and shot her own head, instantly dying. The two lovers were immediately found in each other's arms. The prince condemned the two families, whose feud caused such a tragedy, while the coroner quickly transported two bodies to the morgue.

Cast

Natalie Portman had served as Juliet, but, during practice, it was felt that DiCaprio "molested" herself. Baz Luhrmann also stated that Portman was too young at the time, and made DiCaprio look older than intended. He was 21 at the time of filming and Portman was only 14 years old.

After Sarah Michelle Gellar rejected the role due to scheduling conflicts, DiCaprio stated that Denmark should be cast, because she felt herself genuine in sending her delivery and not trying to impress her by acting flirtatiously.

Production

After the success of Strictly Ballroom , Luhrmann took the time to decide what his next project would be:

Our philosophy is always that we think about what we need in our lives, choose something creative that will make life fulfilled, and then follow that path. With Romeo and Juliet what I want to do is see how Shakespeare might make a movie from one of his plays if he is a director. How will he succeed? We do not know much about Shakespeare, but we know he will make a movie 'film'. He is a player. We know about Elizabethan's stage and that she plays for 3,000 drunk audiences, from street sweepers to the Queen of England - and her competitors are bears and prostitution. So he is an endless entertainer and a great device user and a theatrical trick to finally create something meaningful and deliver a story. That's what we want to do.

Luhrmann got some money from Fox to do workshops and shoot some teaser footage in Sydney. Leonardo DiCaprio agreed to pay his own expenses to fly to Sydney and be a part of it. After Fox saw the recording of the fight scene, they agreed to support him.

All development is done in Australia, with pre-production in Australia and Canada and post-production in Australia. While some parts of the film were taken in Miami, most of the films were taken in Mexico City and Boca del Rio, Veracruz. For example, the Capulet house is located in Chapultepec Castle while the ballroom is built at Stage One of Churubusco Studios; and the church is the Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Del Valle neighborhood.
