Messenger is a young adult fiction of 2004 by writer Lois Lowry. It forms the third installment of The Giver Quartet, started by the winner of the Newbery Medal 1993 Giver . This happened about eight years after the Giver event and about six years after the Gathering Blue event. Characters from two previous books reappear in Messenger , which gives a stronger novel of continuity.
Set in an isolated community known only as the Village, "Messenger" focuses on the boy, Matty, who serves as the messenger through an unpleasant and lethal Forest that surrounds the community.

Plot
Matty was introduced at Blue Gathering as an energetic and impatient individual who is undergoing a transition into adulthood when the story begins. Matty now lives with Seer, who was originally named Christopher, an "invisible" man who was rescued by people from the Village many years before. Matty is desperate for his new name to be "Messenger," which he thinks is best to do.
Many people in the village are like Seer and are expelled from their old community and are sometimes seriously injured, but they have made new homes in the Village. Most Villagers are quite altruistic, and the Village is never short of people willing to help other people cope with some disabilities. Matty comes from a community where people only know what Community says to them and those who do not fit the norm are usually sentenced to death.
Beyond the confines of the Village is the Forest, a natural hunch that most villagers fear. Apart from the lack of dangerous animals, the Forest itself is animated. It is capable of giving "Warning" in the form of injury, caused by things like sharp twigs, stinging insects, or poisonous plants, all of which are deliberately attacked if the Forest is inserted. Those who entered the Forest again after being warned were killed. The forest will kill them. Matty, whom Forest prefers, has passed through the Forest many times without incident. Therefore, he has become a village messenger, bringing news to other communities scattered throughout the region. At one point, Leader (Jonas from The Giver ) said that he received a barge full of books from the Community and that has changed.
At the beginning of the book, disputes arise in the Village. People who trade at a meeting, Trade Mart, change from being merciful and generous to being angry and impatient. Temperamen Villagers changed, and they decided to close their borders and stop allowing refugees and other unwanted people from entering. Seer, after this sudden change, decides to send Matty to travel through the Forest to pick up his daughter, Kira, who lives in the city in a few days. The journey soon becomes very dangerous, as the Forests start trying to involve Kira and Matty. The ability of the leader to see the distance, which is often called the book as "looking out", allows him to feel the danger. He enters the forest to save them, only to be captured alone. Kira, who has the ability to weave patterns of prophecy such as threads and fabrics, uses his prize to contact the Leader, who tells him to use his gift to save them.
The gift was the special ability that Matty had but almost incomprehensibly, which infuriated him and produced anger: the healing power, causing the inwardity from the inside out. Matty put his hands on the ground and managed to restore the unity of the Forest and the people, at the expense of his own life. The leader calls Matty "The Healer".
Near the end is an excerpt from poetry To An Athlete Dying Young: "Today, the path of all our high/shoulder-run runners takes you home/And set you on your threshold down/Townsman from a more town quiet. "It was pronounced by the village school teacher, known as the Mentor.
