" The Climb " is a song performed by American singer Miley Cyrus, for the 2009 film Hannah Montana: The Movie . The song was written by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe, and produced by John Shanks. The album was released on March 5, 2009, as the main single from the soundtrack of the film by Walt Disney Records as well as a bonus song on the international release of The Time of Our Lives. This song is a power ballad with lyrics that describe life as a difficult but rewarding journey. It's styled as a country pop ballad, and is Cyrus's first solo track to be released to state radio. Instrumentation includes piano, guitar and violin.
The song received a nomination for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media at the 52nd Grammy Awards. However, the song was withdrawn from consideration by Walt Disney Records because it has not been written specifically for the film as a necessary category eligibility rule. This song became the top ten songs on the charts in Australia, Canada, Norway and the United States. In the United States, it peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the eighth best-selling digital single of 2009. Five months after its release, the single was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association. of America (RIAA).
The music video that accompanies the song is directed by Matthew Rolston, and depicts scenes of Cyrus who are climbing the mountain or singing, chopping the Hannah Montana clip: The Movie . Cyrus promotes the song with several live performances. The first, at the Inauguration of Children: "We Are the Future" on January 19, 2009, is the first time the song has ever been heard publicly. Cyrus also performed the song as the closing number of the Wonder World Tour. The song is also performed during the Gypsy Heart Tour. "The Climb" has been covered by several artists and is the most popular song choice among auditions for the ninth season of the American singing contest, American Idol , with Hollie Cavanagh featuring it in the top 6 of the eleventh season. Simon Cowell, creator of the British television talent show The X Factor, chose "The Climb" to become the debut single from the sixth winner of the competition. Cover Winner Joe McElderry, released on December 14, 2009 by Syco Music, produced by Quiz & amp; Larossi and topped the Irish Chart Singles and British Singles Chart.
On Saturday, March 24, 2018, Miley performed "The Climb" in March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C.

"The Climb" was accidentally written for the 2009 musical film Hannah Montana: The Movie . Co-writer Jessi Alexander composed a melody song while driving to the home of songwriter partner Jon Mabe. As soon as he arrived, he and Mabe developed a song about overcoming life obstacles inspired by their personal struggles in the music industry. Alexander refers to the process as a form of "therapy" and remember,
"I just drive to work one day. This is just a normal day, nothing special about that day and I just have this melody in my head And I can not get my co-writer Jon Mabe or my guitar quickly enough I just want to play what I hear, and, you know, we just put it fast enough and do not really think about it.Lyrics start coming, I think for both of us, being somewhat underdogs in this business, my co-writer is a songplugger, newly changed songwriter, and I have a record of transactions and grief in the music business.I think for both of us, we just came from the place, you know, 'this is not a race'. "
The song they made was titled "It's the Climb" and written with a third person. Alexander describes his original song as "more spiritual" than the released version, and says it contains lines about prayer. However, he claimed to know it was pop and fit for The Walt Disney Company.
Before reaching Cyrus, the song was rejected by several state artists. Finally, it was taken by Peter Chelsom, director of Hannah Montana: The Movie , which gave it to Cyrus to be recorded for the film. Chelsom discovered what would be "The Climb" when visiting Nashville, Tennessee, during a search to find eleven new songs for Hannah Montana: The Movie. After hearing Alexander's music, Chelsom asked him to send a song for consideration. Alexander recorded "It's the Climb" on the CD and gave it to him. A few weeks later, Chelsom called to say that "the song will be an integral part of the movie". However, he wants Mabe and Alexander to rework some of his song content and change the song from the third person to the first person. Alexander felt a change of "a large number of songs" and commented, "For me, when you change something from third person to first person, it can change the whole meaning of a line." She and Mabe "wrestle to take the words" and how much they can change while maintaining the integrity of the song. After a number of drafts, Mabe and Alexander finally made versions that they felt were "perfect for the movie".
After receiving the final draft, the filmmaker told the songwriter, "This is perfect for Miley, it will change her life, will change your life." Chelsom commented that the song "pops" the movie's music level by entering Cyrus's newly discovered vocal range. Just like the other songs featured on Hannah Montana: The Movie, her song "is woven into the fabric of stories and characters." In the film, Cyrus plays Miley Stewart, a character with a secret double life as a Hannah Montana superstar. Keeping this secret causes trouble between Miley and many other characters in the movie, and makes Miley confused and sorry. He expresses his emotions by writing "The Climb". According to film producer Alfred Gough, "The song is his journey, the lesson he learned in the movie, it's an epic [epic] ballad that summarizes his movie trip and message."
"The Climb" was chosen as the lead single of the soundtrack because of its country elements, which introduced Cyrus to listeners outside his usual pop audience. This song is Cyrus's first solo effort which is marketed directly to state radio, although previously he has recorded and released a country duet with his father, Billy Ray Cyrus, entitled "Ready, Set, Do not Go", in 2007. Warren Truitt from About.com called the song "a serious attempt by Miley to enter the world of contemporary country." "The Climb" leaked onto the Internet on February 4, 2009, two days before the official release to be played. In October 2009, it was re-released to countries outside the United States in an international version of Cyrus's extended drama, The Time of Our Lives.

Composition
"The Climb" is a pop country power ballad that combines soft rock and pop rock and lasts for three minutes and 55 seconds. However, at two minutes and forty-five seconds, "sudden bursts of violins" entered the song, and the song switched to full force. Todd Martens, co-editor of the Los Angeles Times music column, says Cyrus uses a "hoarse voice [that brings a bit of country grit" to the song. "The Climb" is set at the same time as moderate tempo 80 times per minute. The song is sung in the main E key and Cyrus's vocals span one and a half octaves, from E 3 to C # 5 . This song uses standard issue ballad settings with chord, E5 - Asus2 - F? 7us.
According to Fraser McAlpine's BBC music, the song's lyrics assert that life should be viewed as a "difficult but rewarding journey." Both Martens and McAlpine pay particular attention to the line "It's always going to be a tough battle/Sometimes I have to lose." Martens interprets the line in acknowledgment by the singer of his own guilt in life, while McAlpine writes, "In this song which is about fending off something, the authors have sneaked into [...] that occasional setbacks are not the end of the world."
Critical reception
Critical reception for the song is generally positive. Fraser McAlpine of the BBC feels the lyrics are a generic one, but praises Cyrus's vocals: "Miley frees herself well vocally - there are times where her voice sounds a bit tense, but is happy to hear it on a slightly quieter track and with less panic production rather than the uptempo pop song, the sassy we used to use. "Michael Menachem from Billboard magazine called the song" one of the strongest ballads of the year ". Wesley Morris of The Boston Globe praised "The Climb" for being a "national anthem". Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly said, "In songs like [...] 'The Climb', a nineteenth-century Tennessee resident appeared homegrown inflections, but some long r would not exactly shut down pop audience "Todd Martens of Los Angeles Times believes that" The Climb "is buried in cheese and describes it as a" pre-Valentine's Day gooeyness ". However, Martens says, "'Climb' is a rare Miley ballad equivalent to some of the more spunky teen pop."
Heather Phares of Allmusic said, "The best songs that Cyrus sang on the soundtrack have their own names on them". He also made musical comparisons to Shania Twain and described the song as "natural, [...] down to earth and mature". While reviewing Our Time of Life, Michael Hann of The Guardian referred to "The Climb" as a rather "superior ballad", compared to "When I Look at You "and" Obsessed ". Hann said the song was added to the extended game to "add some weight since this US release." Jon Caraminica of The New York Times describes "The Climb" as "an exciting new single that is just a polite, inspirational rock type that can easily be mistaken for self-reckoning." While reviewing the concert, James Reed from The Boston Globe called the song "bland but inspirational".
Awards and nominations
"The Climb" won "Best Song from a Movie" at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards and "Music Choice: Single" at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. At the 52nd Grammy Awards, "The Climb" received a nomination for Best Song Written for Pictures Motion, Television or Other Visual Media, award songwriter. However, Walt Disney Records pulls the song out of consideration because it is not "written specifically for movies, television or other visual media", as well as the dictated Grammy eligibility rules. According to Rolling Stone magazine, "The Climb" was sent for consideration by mistake. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the Grammy Awards presenter, released a statement stating, "Walt Disney Records is proactive and will come to our award department and verify that the song was not written specifically for the film." > Hannah Montana: The Movie . Based on this information, the Academy has fulfilled the label request. "NARAS replaced the nominations with the next highest-earning song," All is Love ", written by Karen O and Nick Zinner for the movie Where Wild Things Are And Milliken from Country Universe gives song D The review consists of only two motivational posters: one reads "Life: Its [ sic ] is not about purpose, but the journey" to describe song content, and artificial reader reading "Success: Everything is easy when you're cute "for his actual review, and then extends his review, calling it" the soulless repetition of a well-known philosophical message (so famous bordering on cliches) that do not provide emotionally coherent context or justification. "Milliken gave the song was of a higher value because "he's a pretty good singer for his age".
Commercial performance
In the week ending March 7, 2009, "The Climb" debuted at number 48 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs. It was, coincidentally, the same week that "Back to Tennessee", by Cyrus's father, Billy Ray Cyrus, debuting at number 59, the first time a father and daughter had a separate chart track on charts since Johnny and Rosanne Cash charted in 1990 with "Silver Stallion" and "One Step over the Line", respectively. "The Climb" eventually reached number 25 on the country genre charts. For the week ending March 21, 2009, the song debuted at number six on Billboard Hot 100 due to the sale of 166,000 digital downloads, thus making the highest Climb "Cylim" scanning attempt at the time, surpassing the best charting attempts "7 Things", peaked at number nine in July 2008. The single is certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of over two million copies. The single was certified triple platinum by Music Canada for sales of 240,000 digital downloads.
"The Climb" is also successful in Australia and New Zealand. The song debuted at Chart Singles Australia at number 46 on April 19, 2009. After ten weeks on the chart, "The Climb" reached number five on the chart, where it lasted for two weeks in a row. "The Climb" was placed at number 84 on the Australian Singles Chart end of the decade. On the UK Singles Chart, "The Climb" made an entry at number 82 on March 28, 2009 and peaked at number 11 on June 16, 2009. In mainland Europe, the song peaked at number 23 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, number eleven in Belgium's Tip Singles Chart (Flanders), and number five on the Norwegian Singles Chart. Music video
Matthew Rolston directed the music video for "The Climb", which aired on Myspace Cyrus's page on February 11, 2009. The video begins with Cyrus shooting holding his guitar and luggage as he begins walking down long, long stretches through the valley. At the end of the valley, the sun broke on a distant mountain. The whole scene is enhanced with computer-generated imagery. Cyrus tied his hair into a bun and wore a travel jacket, gray tank top and cowboy boots. In a separate setting, Cyrus, wearing a gray short-sleeved shirt and loose hair, begins to sing "The Climb" under the blue light in the purple room. Both settings take turns throughout the video. The scene explored from Hannah Montana: The Movie appeared in front of Cyrus as he walked down the street. This video magnifies the scene and montage a movie clip, featuring Cyrus's character and his love interest, Travis Brody (played by Lucas Till) on horseback. Video back to Cyrus runs; he took the rose that fell on the road, then threw it behind him. As the video progresses, he also sees things like a herd of horses and stars crashing across his path. The new setting enters the video where Cyrus dances in the purple room with a countdown or, sometimes, a movie clip projected on the wall behind him. The rain began to flow in the path arrangement. Cyrus put his jacket, guitar box, suitcase, and boots, and continued with only his guitar tied to his shoulder. More montage movie clips play the same way as the first. When the last montage ends, Cyrus finally reaches the peak of the reddish mountain, CGI and triumphantly looks over the edge of the cliff to watch the sun shine over a glittering lake. An alternative version of the music video including the Hannah Montana clip: The Movie exists and is sent to multiple channels, including VH1.
Todd Martens of Los Angeles Times wrote that when she enjoyed the song, she was not sure about the video. He commented that while the video was an improvement since Cyrus's video for "7 Things" (2008), the arrangement in the music video "The Climb" looked as if it had been painted by Thomas Kinkade and Cyrus's dance appeared off-beat. Travis from MTV described this video as "beautiful shot (though very digital)". Lyndsey Parker from Yahoo! Music says that the top setting is similar to the music video for Britney Spears' "I'm Not a Girl, Not a Woman". Parker also feels the scene in which Cyrus is seen on a cliff, shot with a large sweep with an aerial camera, has been "lifted directly from Bon Jovi's 80s video". In 2009, the video received a MuchMusic Video nomination for Best Artist Video, but lost to Lady Gaga's music video for "Poker Face".
Live show
Cyrus opens Kids' Inaugural: "We Are the Future" with the premiere of "The Climb". The event was held on January 19, 2009, at Washington D.C. at the Verizon Center to celebrate Barack Obama's inauguration as President of the United States. Cyrus, dressed in an embroidered red ball gown made by Reem Acra, dedicated the song to the daughters of Obama, Sasha and Malia Obama. Following the official release of the song in March 2009, Cyrus continued promotions for "The Climb", performing live for performances including American Idol The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , the annual event -44 Academy of Country Music Awards, Good Morning America, and Live with Regis and Kelly during April. On April 13, Cyrus performed "The Climb" as part of his set for AOL Sessions. On April 24th, Cyrus sang "The Climb" and other songs on the London Apple Store. The show was recorded and sold exclusively by the United Kingdom iTunes Store as a live extended play titled iTunes Live from London. On June 7, 2009, Cyrus performed the song at the 20th Annual A Time for Heroes Celebrity Carnival, an outdoor carnival that supported the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Cyrus also sang "The Climb" on The Today Show on August 28 and at the first D23 Expo on September 11, 2009.
To promote the soundtrack of Hannah Montana: The Movie, Cyrus performed "The Climb" on a five-day acoustic radio promo tour for six days that reached over 250 radio shows. The song is also used as the closing number of Cyrus' 2009 Wonder World Tour, its first world tour. During the tour, Cyrus performs on a white tank and shorts, boots, and metal vests, while the giant video screen above presents the sunset. Upon completion, Cyrus exits through the aisle on the stage while the shooting stars and the earth in the sky appear on the screen. Melinda M. Thompson of The Oregonian describes the show as "a truly memorable moment - A touchy and touching appearance from 'The Climb'", while Jim Harrington from The Oakland Tribune > i> said the performance was a "closer tender" that drew a big response at the September 18 concert in Oakland, California, at Oracle Arena. Cyrus then performs songs at the Rock in Rio concert in Lisbon, Portugal and nightclubs London, England, Heaven and G-A-Y.
Cyrus performed the song during the Gypsy Heart Tour. He also performed this song on CNN Heroes on December 11, 2011. Six years later, in 2017, he performed The Climb on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, followed by an acoustic version on The Howard Stern Show. And on March 24, 2018, Cyrus performed the song in front of a large outdoor mob protesting gun violence at March For Our Lives in Washington, D.C.

cover version
"The Climb" has been covered by some amateurs and established actions. Mirror Image Records' indie rock group HelenaMaria covered the song and released it as a digital single in March 2009. In auditioning for the ninth season of the American Idol TV singing competition, "The Climb" was the most popular selection of songs among the contestants. Mandi Bierly, writing for Entertainment Weekly, commented, "sounds like we can get an Idol whose voice actually matches the inspirational tone that she will be forced to record as the first single. (Although the chances of the song being anywhere as well as 'The Climb'...) ". While informing Cyrus of his popularity on American Idol, serial host Ryan Seacrest commented that the contestants "believed it was a song that would make an impression and [...] will take them to the next level". Cyrus said he was happy because the song was about "following your dreams and not giving up". Alan Cumming covered the song on his cabaret tour and put it on Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs' audio CD: Live at the Carlyle Cafe . Australia's Judah Kelly covered the song on her debut album, Count On Me (2017).
Joe McElderry's Version
Background and composition
In the same year as the original release of "The Climb", British executive Simon Cowell chose Joe McElderry, Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon, three finalists from the sixth British television talent show The X Factor to record in preparation for one release as soon as the winner is announced. After the elimination of Solomon, Murs and McElderry sang the song on December 13, 2009, as their last appearance in the competition. After winning the competition, McElderry's version of "The Climb", produced by Quiz & amp; Larossi, was released on December 14, 2009 by Syco Music as the first single from her debut studio album Wide Awake (2010).
McElderry said that the lyrics for "The Climb" meant a lot to him: "This is an emotional song because that's what has happened in the last few months. Everything is very, very unreal." According to Peter Robinson of The Guardian , the cover has a "plinky" piano in its introduction. With regard to the lyrics, Robinson interprets, "the line about 'uphill battles' and 'must lose' seems to be talking about Joe's future possibilities."
Reception
Peter Robinson of The Guardian describes "The Climb" as "an uncontroversial controversial choice" to cover and continue, "While 'The Climb' may be a suitable choice for the winning single, the fact that it's a cover of the latest song means it's still a bit weird. "
In the week ending December 26, 2009, "The Climb" debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart; its debut position was influenced by a campaign consisting of members of the Facebook group, which aims to get Rage Against the Machine 1992 "Killing in Name" to the top spot during Christmas week. The following week, the song reached number one, becoming number one in the 2000s decade, where it was maintained for a week. The single is certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipments exceeding 600,000 copies. The song has sold 810,000 copies in the UK in January 2015.
"The Climb" debuted at number one on the Irish Singles Chart in the week ending December 17, 2009, where it was held in the top spot for four consecutive weeks. In mainland Europe, the song is mapped in Eurochart Hot 100 Singles at number four in the week ending January 9, 2010.
Music videos
The video was recorded on December 16, 2009, in London, England. The video begins with a snapshot of The X Factor and then transitions to McElderry's close-up image in the main setting, a flooded city landscape - the scene is drawn in a setting overrun with the background of the city landscape. McElderry wears a gray vest and a gray shirt, as he stands in the background and performs. Throughout the entire video, scenes alternate between flooded city landscape settings and recycled footage of The X Factor , in black and white to show in live color. The video ends with McElderry being told he won the competition, hugging his friends.
