Lokasi

The Sunset District is the largest neighborhood in the city and San Francisco area, and with a population of over 85,000, the city is also the most populous. Golden Gate Park forms the northern border of the neighborhood, and the Pacific Ocean (or, more particularly, the long coastal strand known as Ocean Beach) forms its western border. The southern and eastern border of the Sunset District is not very clear, but there is a general consensus that the neighborhood does not extend farther south than Sigmund Stern Grove and Sloat Boulevard and no farther east than Stanyan Street (east of the Parnassus campus of the University of California, San Francisco) and Laguna Honda Hospital. Prior to the settlement and commercial development of the Sunset District, most of its territory was covered by sand dunes and was originally referred to by the 19th century Franciscan San Francisco as the "Outer Land."

The nearby Sunset District and Richmond District (on the north side of Golden Gate Park) are often collectively known as The Avenues because the majority of the two environments are spanned by the north-south number line. When the city was originally laid out, the streets were numbered from 1 to 49, and the east-west streets were assigned the letters A through X. In 1909, to reduce confusion for letter operators, east-west streets and 1st Avenue and 49th Avenue was renamed. The east-west streets are named in alphabetical order ascending to the south after leading 19th-century American politicians, military leaders, or explorers; Mexican landowners of the 19th century; and Spanish conquistadors. 1st Avenue was renamed Arguello Boulevard, and 49th Avenue was renamed La Playa Street (Spanish for "beach").

Today, the first street number is 2nd Avenue, starting one block west of Arguello Boulevard, and the last is 48th Avenue near Ocean Beach. The number of roads gradually increased, with one exception: what would be 13th Avenue known as Funston Avenue, named after Frederick Funston, a US Army General famous for his exploits during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, and to direct the US Army in response to the 1906 earthquake.

The east-west streets of Sunset appear mostly in alphabetical order. These roads are: Lincoln Way (adjacent to the southern side of Golden Gate Park), Hugo (from Arguello to 7th Avenue only), Irving, Judah, Kirkham, Lawton, Moraga, Noriega, Ortega, Pacheco, Quintara, Rivera, Santiago, Taraval, Ulloa, Vicente, Wawona, Yorba, and Sloat Boulevard. "X" was originally proposed to be Xavier, but was changed to Yorba because of the pronunciation controversy.

History

The origin of the name "Sunset" is not entirely clear. One claim shows that Aurelius Buckingham, a developer who owns property in the area, created the term in 1886. Another claim came from the California Midwinter Exhibition, held at Golden Gate Park in 1894 and also known as "The Sunset City."

Prior to the construction of the Puncak Twin Tunnel in 1917, Sunset was a vast and unspoiled area in large dunes and coastal bushlands known as "The Land of the Outdoors." The construction began in the 1870s and 1880s with the construction of the Golden Gate Park, but it did not reach full scale until after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, as many home tracts and hut homes are now a hallmark of the environment built into sand dunes. These tractat houses will replace smaller, original settlements built in the sand dunes called Carville, which are so named for the wild dwellers living in abandoned carts (horse-drawn trolley) and dump trucks dumped on dunes. Development grew in the 1930s, when Sunset was built and developed into a tramway. Baby boom post World War II in the 1950s saw the last sand dunes flattened and replaced with single houses and many people. In this development, most built by Henry Doelger, the entire block consists of houses of the same common character, distinguished by their plasterboard facade variations and mirrored floor plans, with most built on 25-feet wide ground (7.6 m) without empty spaces between houses. Later, Oliver Rousseau built a more individualistic home in the district.

Segment

For most of its history, Sunset exists as a large individual area. In recent years, the environment has been popularly divided into three parts with sometimes unclear borders.

Inner Sunset

The Inner Sunset is bordered by Lincoln Way to the north, Arguello Boulevard to the east, Quintara Street to the south, and 22 Avenue to the west. The northeast part of Sunset is located west of Mount Sutro. The main commercial area is located along Irving Street from 5th Avenue to 12th Avenue, which is packed with restaurants and shops.

The Inner Sunset is a unique part of San Francisco that hosts numerous local businesses, including restaurants, bars, breweries, bookstores, bakeries, coffee shops, ice cream shops, clothing and shoe shops, tattoo parlors and a wine bar. All these companies gather around the intersection of 9th Avenue and Irving Street. There is a lot of gastronomic diversity in the restaurants located in Inner Sunset: Pizza, Mexican, Thai, Persian, Korean, Malaysian, Hawaiian, Greek, Ethiopian, Pakistani, Cajun/Creole, Dim Sum, Turkish, Peruvian, Chinese, Vietnamese Cuisine, California, Mediterranean, Indian, Japanese, Vegetarian.

Central Sunset

Central Sunset is limited by Lincoln Way to the north, 22 Avenue to the east, Quintara Street to the south, and Sunset Boulevard to the west. The area is mostly residential with many beautiful and large houses and a commercial path along Irving Road from 19th Avenue to 24th Avenue and on Noriega Street from 19th Avenue to 27th Avenue and 30th Avenue to 33rd Avenue. Features of this area include the Sunset Reservoir (which takes eight square blocks between Ortega and Quintara roads and roads 24 and 28), which has a small park around its outer edge; Golden Gate Park; The Sunset Recreation Center; and Abraham Lincoln High School.

Outer Sunset

The Outer Sunset is bordered by Lincoln Way to the north, Sunset Boulevard (between 36 and 37th street) to the east, Sloat Boulevard to the south, and Ocean Beach to the west. The main commercial roads are Yehuda, Noriega, and Taraval. The Outer Sunset is the foggiest part of San Francisco because it is close to Ocean Beach. Major attractions in this area include the San Francisco Zoo, Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach and Lake Merced.

Attractions and characteristics

The western part of Sunset is bordered by the cold northern California coastline of the Pacific, so it tends to get a lot of famous San Francisco fog. The Sunset can be foggy and cold for several days during the summer. Sunset's best weather is usually from August to December, when regional air patterns transition from ground to offshore and the area is free of fog. Sand carried by the Pacific Ocean wind can be found on the highways and driveways in the first five to ten blocks east of Ocean Beach.

The Sunset District contains several large park and leisure areas. The San Francisco Zoo is located in the southwest corner of the neighborhood by Lake Merced, the largest lake in San Francisco. Also inside the Lake Merced area are several golf courses: the private Olympic Club and the San Francisco Golf Club, and the public Harding Park TPC. Across Lake Merced is Fort Funston, an ancient coastal battery, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Fort Funston mainly has the last remnants of the sand dune ecosystem that once covered the entire Sunset District.

There is a Sunday morning farmer's market, located at 1315 8th Avenue (parking lot between 8th and 9th Avenue). The market is operated by the Association of Pacific Coastal Farmers Market and is sponsored by Inner Sunset Park Neighbor. The Inner Sunset Farmers' Market offers California's products, fish, eggs and meats, as well as local food vendors and craftsmen.

Stern Grove, a tree-filled park and amphitheater located on Sloat Boulevard between the 19th and 34th streets, known for its annual summer festivals.

Three parks are located on the far east border of the district: the northernmost is the Grand View Park (also called Turtle Hill) an elevated small park surrounded by 14th and 15th Avenue, as well as Noriega Street; moving south, next is Golden Gate Heights Park, just east of 14th Avenue north of Quintara; and Hawk Hill Park, also east of 14th Avenue in Santiago. This natural area belongs to the upper ridge system and includes some of the remaining sand dune communities in the city.

Education

The San Francisco Unified School District operates the K-12 public school.

Educational institutions include the Parnassus campus and medical center of the University of California, San Francisco, located at Inner Sunset; the main campus of San Francisco State University, located in the southwest corner of the neighborhood across Lake Merced; Abraham Lincoln High School, located in the center of the Sunset District; St. Ignatius College Preparatory (a private, coeducational school operating in San Francisco since 1855) is located since 1969 adjacent to Sunset Boulevard; and Lowell High School, the oldest public high school west of Mississippi and one of the most famous in the United States.

Coastal culture

Strips near the Pacific Ocean have well-known surfers populations that take advantage of the sometimes excellent Ocean Beach wave conditions. Due to the cold Pacific currents that carry seawater from Alaska, it is usually necessary to wear wetsuits while surfing in Ocean Beach. Several surf shops can be found near the beach at Outer Sunset.

Some playgrounds are located on Sunset, including Playground and Sunset Recreation, Blue Boat Playground, West Sunset, McCoppin Field and South Sunset.

Current problem

The current effort to develop a comprehensive plan for this part of San Francisco is the Ocean Master Plan (OBMP). OBMP is an inter-institutional effort to develop a long-term vision for Ocean Beach that will address many issues.

Climate

Like most of the Northern California coast, the Sunset district has a mild summer Mediterranean climate, albeit with an unusual annual temperature distribution. The hottest days of the year took place in October and then the coldest night of the year occurred just two months later in December. The climate is heavily influenced by the Pacific Ocean and therefore has a colder summer and milder winters than downtown San Francisco. Rainfall follows a seasonal pattern with abundant rainfall in winter (almost all of this falls as rain) and a very dry summer.
