The following is a list of defined terms that are used to describe the morphology of the leaves in the description and taxonomy of the plant. Leaves may be simple (single leaf blades or laminae) or compounds (with some leaflets). The edges of the leaves may be regular or irregular, possibly smooth or bearing hair, feathers or thorns. For other terms that describe other aspects of the leaves other than their overall morphology, see the leaf article.

Struktur daun
The leaves of most plants include a flat structure called a knife or lamina, but not all leaves are flat, some are cylindrical. Leaves may be simple, with single leaf blades, or compounds, with multiple leaflets. In flowering plants, such as leaf blades, there may be petiole and stipule; Compound leaves may have rachis supporting leaflets. Leaf structure is illustrated by several terms which include:

Leaf shape and leaflet
Being one of the more visible features, leaf shape is commonly used for plant identification (similar terms are used for other plant parts, such as tepal).
Edge
Leaf brims (edges) are often used in the identification of visual plants because they are usually consistent in species or species groups, and are easily observable characteristics. Edges and margins can be exchanged in the sense that they both refer to the outer border of the leaf.
Fold leaf
Leaves can also be folded or rolled in various ways. Folding the leaves in the bud is vernation, ptyxis is a single leaf folding in the bud.
Latin Description
The Latin word for 'leaf', folium , is neutral. In single leaf descriptions, single neutral endings of adjectives are used, eg folium lineare 'linear leaf'. In the description of several leaves, the neutral plural is used, for example folia linearia 'linear leaf'. Description generally refers to plants using single or plural ablatives, eg. foliis ovatis 'with oval leaves'.
