Defarge is the owner of a wine shop in the slums of Saint Antoine in Paris. He and his wife Madame Therese Defarge are supporters of the vibrant revolution and regularly extract and gather information from inside the wine shop. When the story begins, Defarge is storing Dr. Alexandre Manette, her old master, who had just been released from eighteen years of unfair and secret prison in the Bastille. Defarge is very loyal to Dr. Manette and really cared for her, but she did not shrink from a bit of exploitation by showing Manette to another patriot as inspiration for the rebellion she hoped to incite. Defarge tells the story of Manette to a group of men in the hope that they will spread the news of injustice committed by the aristocracy - in particular, a pair of famous brothers named St. EvrÃÆ'¨monde. Defarge is the leader of his community and will be very important in leading the people in Storming of the Bastille. He found the paper in the old cell Dr. Manette at the Bastille who documented why Manette was imprisoned and by whom. This paper proved almost fatal to the protagonist of the novel, Charles Darnay, in recounting a series of injustices and murders by his father and uncle. Worse, this humiliation was committed against Madame Defarge's family, Ernest's brutal wife, who convinced her to denounce Darnay to the guillotine. Generally kind and worthy, Defarge is undermined by loyalty to his wife and his loyalty to Dr. Manette; he did nothing to stop the Manette family from escaping France, despite Madame Defarge's insistence. But Darnay was not executed; he was saved by Karton. The carton prophesies that Ernest Defense and Vengeance will be consumed by the Revolution guillotine.
