Efren PeÃÂÂ aflorida , OLD (born March 9, 1981), is a Filipino teacher and development worker. He offers alternative Filipino youth to street gangs through education, reinventing school settings in unconventional locations such as cemeteries and landfills.
In March 2009, PeÃÆ'® aflorida was featured as a CNN Hero as part of a news network program to honor individuals who make outstanding contributions to help others. On November 22, 2009, he was named the CNN Hero of the Year.

In 2000, he graduated from San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite with a degree in computer technology, receiving the highest honors. He pursued a second course at Cavite City's Cavite State University campus, graduating cum laude in 2006 with a degree in Secondary Education.

In 1997, at the age of 16, PeÃÆ'® aflorida started a youth group in high school aimed at diverting students' attention from street gangs, and toward community activism and personal development. Joining other classmates, they named the group "Dynamic Youth Company".
The Dynamic Youth Company started out as a friendship club of about 20 members, with the goal of providing youth awareness projects, talents and self-development activities, and community services. They collaborated with Club 8586, another community service organization operating in the area.
They ultimately pioneered the idea of ​​a "stroller class", in which strollers were stocked with school materials such as books, pens, tables and chairs, and then used on Saturday to recreate school settings in unconventional locations such as funerals or bins.

PeÃÆ'® aflorida was nominated for CNN Heroes by Club 8586, a youth group that financed primary and secondary education. After sifting through 9,000 nominees from more than 100 countries, the CNN Blue Ribbon Panel selected PeÃÆ'® aflorida as one of 28 heroes of 2009. On October 1, PeÃÆ'® aflorida was selected among the ten finalists. On November 22, he was named CNN Hero of the Year for 2009. This award includes $ 100,000 cash to continue his work with Dynamic Youth Company.
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave a fatwa to Efren PeÃÂÂ ± aflorida Ordo Lakandula in a ceremony at MalacaÃÆ' ± ang Palace on his return to the Philippines.
