What is AUTOLOGICAL WORD? What does AUTOLOGICAL WORD mean ...

The word autological (also called homologous word or autonym ) is a word that states properties that are also owned (eg the word "short" "is a noun," English "is English," pentasyllabic "has five syllables," word "is a word). Conversely, the word heterological , a word that does not apply to itself (eg "long" is not long, "syllable one" has five syllables).

Unlike the more general concept of autology and self-references, this particular distinction and "autological" and "heterological" contradictions are rare in linguistics to describe linguistic phenomena or word classes, but are currents in logic and philosophy in which they are introduced by Kurt Grelling and Leonard Nelson to illustrate the semantic paradox, which became known as the Grelling paradox or the Grail-Nelson paradox.

One source of autologous words is ostensive definitions: references to class of words with class member examples, such as those performed by synecdoche: such as mondegreen, oxymoron, eggcorn, bahuvrihi, etc. The status of words as autological may change over time. For example, neologism was once an autologue word but no longer; likewise, protologism (a word recently discovered by the literary historian Mikhail Epstein) may or may not lose its autologous status depending on whether it gains wider usage or not.
